Foldable Market Growth Gives Apple a Major Opportunity

IDC says Apple's entry is a major reason the category is growing instead of declining. Counterpoint has also forecast Apple taking about 25 percent of the global foldable market in 2026. The research firm says the short selling period and early supply limits are important factors behind the 6 million unit estimate. The forecast therefore depends heavily on Apple's ability to ramp production.

The $1,999 Price Tag Could Test Consumer Demand

Price could be another major test for the iPhone Duo as Apple has placed the foldable at the top of its smartphone lineup with a starting price of $1,999 for the 256GB model. Higher storage versions go up to $3,199 for 2TB. The premium pricing comes as smartphone makers face rising component costs. Counterpoint says higher memory prices are putting pressure on the wider smartphone market and pushing companies toward higher prices. IDC expects the global smartphone market to shrink sharply in 2026 while foldables remain one of the few areas showing growth. Apple is therefore entering a growing category with a very high price tag.

China Performance Adds to Apple's Premium Strategy

Apple's position in China also gives the iPhone Duo launch another major backdrop. Counterpoint said the iPhone 18 Pro series recorded 12 percent year-on-year growth during its first week in China. The stronger start helped Apple take the top spot in weekly smartphone sales during the period covered by the research. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale on September 18 after Apple unveiled them on September 9. Apple has also seen a strong performance from its recent iPhone lineup in China even as the country's wider smartphone market faces pressure. That creates another important test for the company's premium strategy.

Can Apple Actually Reach 6 Million Units?

So will the iPhone Duo sell 6 million units in 2026? That number is still a Counterpoint forecast rather than a final sales result. The biggest factors will be production capacity, the October 23 launch, the $1,999 starting price and consumer interest in foldable phones. IDC's 22.9 million unit market forecast shows that the category is growing, while Counterpoint expects Apple to quickly take a meaningful share despite its late entry. Apple's strong early iPhone 18 Pro performance in China adds to the interest around the company, but the iPhone Duo will face a different challenge.
